For Your Christmas Reading

In the West, we rarely learn what the Eastern Orthodox Church holds as its view of Christ during the Christmas season. If you are more inclined to a mystical view of the world of spirit, this might interest you.

According to religionfacts.com:

"As in all of Christianity, doctrine is important in Eastern Orthodoxy. Orthodox Christians attach great importance to the Bible, the conclusions of the Seven Ecumenical Councils, and right ("orthodox") belief. However, the Eastern Churches approach religious truth differently than the Western Churches. For Orthodox Christians, truth must be experienced personally. There is less focus on the exact definition of religious truth and more on the practical and personal experience of truth in the life of the individual and the church. Precise theological definition, when it occurs, is for the purpose of excluding error.

This emphasis on personal experience of truth flows into Orthodox theology, which has a rich heritage. Especially in the first millenium of Christian history, the Eastern Church produced significant theological and philosophical thought.

In the Western churches, both Catholic and Protestant, sin, grace, and salvation are seen primarily in legal terms. God gave humans freedom, they misused it and broke God's commandments, and now deserve punishment. God's grace results in forgiveness of the transgression and freedom from bondage and punishment.

The Eastern churches see the matter in a different way. For Orthodox theologians, humans were created in the image of God and made to participate fully in the divine life. The full communion with God that Adam and Eve enjoyed meant complete freedom and true humanity, for humans are most human when they are completely united with God.
The result of sin, then, was a blurring of the image of God and a barrier between God and man. The situation in which mankind has been ever since is an unnatural, less human state, which ends in the most unnatural aspect: death. Salvation, then, is a process not of justification or legal pardon, but of reestablishing man's communion with God. This process of repairing the unity of human and divine is sometimes called "deification." This term does not mean that humans become gods but that humans join fully with God's divine life.

The Eastern Orthodox view of the Trinity also differs somewhat from that of the Christian West. In its Christology, Orthodoxy tends to emphasize the divine, preexistent nature of Christ, whereas the West focuses more on his human nature. However, both East and West affirm Christ's full humanity and full divinity as defined by the ecumenical councils. In fact, Christ's humanity is also central to the Orthodox faith, in the doctrine that the divine became human so that humanity might be raised up to the divine life.
The process of being reunited to God, made possible by Christ, is accomplished by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit plays a central role in Orthodox worship: the liturgy usually begins with a prayer to the Spirit and invocations made prior to sacraments are addressed to the Spirit.

It is in the view of the Holy Spirit that Orthodox theology differs from Western theology, and although the difference might now seem rather techinical and abstract, it was a major contributor to the parting of East from West in the 11th century. This dispute is known as the Filioque Controversy, as it centers on the Latin word filioque ("and from the Son"), which was added to the Nicene Creed in Spain in the 6th century. The original creed proclaimed only that the Holy Spirit "proceeds from the Father."

The purpose of the addition was to reaffirm the divinity of the Son, but Eastern theologians objected both to the unilateral editing of a creed produced by an ecumenical council and to the edit itself. For Eastern Christians, both the Spirit and the Son have their origin in the Father."

So.... with 41,000 denominations in the Christian world, you may want to assess the MANY views of Christ this Christmas season.

Stay Peaceful,

Jason

Peace and Work

On tomorrow's Stay Peaceful, the topic will be "Peace and Work."

We spend as much as half of our time (and sometimes more!) working to "make a living". While doing that, are we living at all? If not, what are we making? What does it mean to have peace at work? How can work become a source of peace? Is only the monastic approach to life the right way to peace at work?

These and other ideas will be explored on tomorrow's Stay Peaceful.

I hope you can tune in.

Stay Peaceful,

Jason

Peace and The Way

As the fiscal year begins for many of us, the opportunity for a new start and new approach to life curiously reappears at the beginning of a school year in the Fall. As many rush about preparing fr the upcoming year and possibly getting in their last weekend of "freedom", Stay Peaceful will look at this "semi-New Year" by asking questions about how we can have a fresh start a fresh way.

So, the topic for today's Stay Peaceful is Peace and The Way. The Way has been described and spoken about by many individuals and groups throughout history. From Christianity to Taoism to self-help gurus to non-religious philosophers and thinkers, The Way is a topic of much consideration and discussion.

Many voices have uttered that a New Way must be adopted or we face the very real prospect of extinction.

This should prove to be an interesting show.

I hope you can tune in.

Peace and Status

We live in a society that takes great value on status. From possessions to appearances to careers to personal incomes to noted achievements and public acclaim, our culture seems steeped in status symbols and the accompanying "star" syndromes.

So, on today's Stay Peaceful the topic is Peace and Status. When we define "status" we use various means of establishing our "position" in a society that claims to be "free" of the trappings of caste.

This should prove to be an interesting show.

I hope you can tune in.

Peace and Mysticism

Mysticism is a path that has become somewhat popular for some seekers. The question that will be addressed on the next Stay Peaceful is: "What does mysticism offer you to consider on the path to knowing your true self?"

Primarily focussed on the tradition of Sufism, the mystical "arm" of Islam that gave rise to Rumi, and the writings of Idries Shah, this week's show will explore that question and other thoughts connected to the search for meaning and, ultimately, true peace.

I hope you can tune in,

Jason.

Peace and Silence

Today on Stay Peaceful the topic will be Peace and Silence.

Silence is an elusive substance in our world today. It seems that the noise of life is something that has become amplified in our daily lives, something that we openly increase in an effort to make ourselves believe that we are really here. We know the value of being silent and seeking quiet spaces and times, but we often forget to commit ourselves to achieving those silences.

Of course, absolute silence is impossible to experience. Nevertheless, the value of silence, or at least quiet, requires some reflection. So, on today's show, the discussion will focus on silence, or quiet, and how we can engage with this precious element that is so challenging to our sense of what life is about.

This should prove to be an interesting show.

I hope you can tune in.

Today's Stay Peaceful: Peace and the Mystics

On today's Stay Peaceful, the topic will be "Peace and the Mystics".

The mystical approach to life has been criticized as "not relevant" and "inconsequential".  Staunch materialists have dismissed the mystic as simply idiocy or superstition. In our current materialistic paradigm, science has embraced the notion that something must be proven physically, otherwise it is not true. Non-theists and New Atheists have decried anything mystical as sheer lunacy and have propelled their special brand of vitriol accordingly against Christianity and (less frequently) Islam and Judaism.

Today the discussion on Stay Peaceful will focus on the Mystics and their contributions to the spiritual life. How can we take their teachings and apply them to create a more peaceful world?

Who are the mystics? Where and when did the modern tradition arise? How is the mystical tradition continuing today?

I hope you can tune in.

Peace and Reciprocity

Today on Stay Peaceful, the topic will be "Peace and Reciprocity."

When a transgression has occurred, we often seek recompense and, in some cases, full reciprocity. Many people live their lives seeking revenge, believing that once they "achieve" reciprocity, that they will have a sense of justice, and, hence, a sense of peace.

So, today's Stay Peaceful show will focus on an investigation into the ideals of reciprocity and how it approaches the topic of peace.

I hope you can tune in.

Peace In The News

Today on Stay Peaceful, the topic will be Peace In The News.

The newscast is often a series of announcements highlighting the negativity in the world. "If it bleeds, it leads," is the axiom.

Today on Stay Peaceful, news of a different sort. Today's show will focus on the positive news items that have not been widely spread by the alphabet soup of broadcasters in the West (ABC, CBC, CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, etc.). These will be news items of events and stories highlighting peace, all happening today.

I hope you can tune in to an especially uplifting show.

Peace through Adversity

The topic for today's Stay Peaceful is Peace through Adversity.

We all face adversity and have to deal with difficult circumstances. The question is how we move toward peace in the midst of adversity.

Can we distinguish what is a "good" event as opposed to a "bad" event? What can we learn from so-called 20/20 hindsight? How do we assess our life experience? How do we proceed with our lives when adverse conditions or events strike us?

These thematic questions will help guide the show today.

I hope you can tune in.

Peace and Storytelling

Today on Stay Peaceful the topic will be Peace and Storytelling.

Before writing, before art, storytelling is said to be the way that we shared information, the way that we became social, the way that we developed community. So, today's show will explore the role of storytelling and the establishment of knowledge and peace.

From epic tales that take days to relate to the pithy anecdote, stories dominate our consciousness. What can storytelling do for the cause of peace? What are the pitfalls of storytelling? How do we employ storytelling to further the cause of peace?

I hope you can tune in.

Peace and Legacies of The Victorian Age

On today's Stay Peaceful, the topic is "Peace and Legacies of The Victorian Age".

Here in Canada on Monday we celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria, the monarch that defined an era. The Victorian age saw great change and progress socially, politically, and spiritually. It also saw negative elements that have maintained a stranglehold on our Western culture, elements that have been detrimental to our personal and global peace.

So, what are some of these legacies that still exist in our lives today, and should we engage or deny such approaches to life and community?

This should be an insightful and interesting program.

I hope you can tune in.

Topic for Today's Stay Peaceful: Peace and Justice

On today's Stay Peaceful, the topic is Peace and Justice.

It seems that daily we are faced with stories about injustice and unfairness. Many of us believe in justice for everyone, but it seems that our world does not support the dispensation of justice universally.

Money, power, influence corrupts the cause of justice. What does that spell for the future? How can we correct this problem?

Many people have committed their lives to the cause of promoting justice where fairness and equality do not exist. What can we learn from these historic figures?

Some of the ideas that will be discussed on today's Stay Peaceful will include:

  1. What does it mean to have justice?
  2. What impediments to justice need to be overcome?
  3. What are our personal responsibilities when it comes to justice?
  4. How is justice so intrinsically connected to peace?

These and other ideas will be examined and discussed on today's Stay Peaceful.

I hope you you can tune in.

Jason

The Dalai Lama Says...

Peace and Decision-Making

On the next Stay Peaceful, the topic will be Peace and Decision-Making.

We face decisions every day, every moment of our lives. Many of us have developed strategies to make decisions. The more important the issue, the more ornate our decision-making process can be.

So, how do we make decisions without the inherent anxiety or insecurity that is part of that process? When we make poor decisions, what are the factors that drive such decisions? How can we make better decisions?

These and other ideas surrounding Peace and Decision-Making will be featured on the next Stay Peaceful.

I hope you can tune in.

Peace and Self-Worth

Today on Stay Peaceful the topic will be Peace and Self-Worth.

Everyone suffers some setbacks in life and can start to reevaluate their situation as life continues to throw challenges at us. In the midst of such challenges, self-worth can be compromised and questioned.

According to some traditions, worthiness derives from outside a person, while other modes of self-acceptance call for a belief in one's own inherent worth and goodness.

So, by exploring some writings and stories centred on tis topic, Stay Peaceful will attempt to discover some concepts and practices directly associated with self-worth and inner peace, communal peace and, ultimately, world peace.

I hope you can tune in.

Jason

Peace and Friendship

On the next Stay Peaceful, Peace and Friendship will be our topic.

As Easter happens this weekend, Easter Sunday is the day that Christians mark the most holy event of their calendar. Christ reportedly said: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13).

So, Stay Peaceful will be discussing the topic of friendship and its inherent value and meaning in our lives, lives that often strain to find true friendship.

This will prove to be an interesting show.

I hope you can tune in.

Peace and Prayer

On today's Stay Peaceful, our topic will be Peace and Prayer.

As Catholics enter their most holy week, prayer is a central activity that all are called to do. Daily, obligatory prayer is a hallmark of most religions, and the attendant experience of prayer has been cited as a benefit not only spiritually, but physically to the one praying.

So, today's Stay Peaceful will focus on aspects of prayer and ideas surrounding the practice. From uttered, sung and intoned prayer to silent prayer to promises of prayer, this activity is as everyday as sunshine for many.

Consumerism and Peace

On the next Stay Peaceful, the topic will be Consumerism and Peace.

We live in a highly commercialized environment. The so-called "American Dream" that was forged after WWII is now being chased by several countries that had previously rejected the idea of reaching for the proverbial brass ring. The "Pursuit of Happiness" is now synonymous with the pursuit of wealth. The North American economy has demonstrated that consumerism is not sustainable, nor is it a healthy way to live, environmentally or spiritually.

So, this Sunday's discussion on Stay Peaceful will focus the following areas of consideration:

  • What does consumerism tout as the way to live?
  • What have been the effects of consumerism to individual peace and happiness?
  • What do writings, modern and ancient, have to say about living a consumerist life?
  • Since we all must consume to live, how should an individual live as a consumer?
  • How do we make good choices in regards to our need to consume?
These issues will be discussed on the next Stay Peaceful.

I hope you can tune in.

Jason

Peace and Memory

On the next Stay Peaceful, the topic will be Peace and Memory.

Mental health is often marked by the ability to have a "good" memory. Yet, memory is a confounding issue. Many studies suggest that the idea of "selective memory" is really the case at all times. Memories can soothe, elate, entertain, but memories can also cause depression and be a source for mental disease. Memories can serve as the source of our present reality, according to some philosophical views.

So, Stay Peaceful will explore this topic with a focus on the the relationship between memory and our inner peace.

I hope you can tune in.

Fasting and Peace

On the next Stay Peaceful, the topic will be Fasting and Peace.

Fasting is an ancient practice, often used today for its health benefits. Health food stores proffer cleanses and other packages of supplements to aid in making your body healthier through a controlled series of fasts.

Fasting has a spiritual aspect as well. Fasting is promoted and practiced in practically every major religion and nonreligious quest today. Historically touted as a way to "draw closer" to a seeker's goal or spiritual desire, fasting could be the most common tradition in a spiritual journey. However, despite this call to fast, many followers of spiritual traditions do not practice this mandatory aspect of their faith.

Fasting has also entered the social landscape as a method of protest, as a way to challenge power and injustice. Often successful, this aspect of fasting is gaining wider and wider popularity with recent social and economic issues worldwide.

The next Stay Peaceful will discuss fasting and its relationship to peace, both personally and globally.

This week's show will be 2 hours, starting at noon and running until 2pm Pacific.

I hope you can tune in,

Stay Peaceful,

Jason

Peace and Heritage

On Sunday's Stay Peaceful, the topic will be Peace and Heritage.

Many people seem to be searching for their background and heritage. Websites proclaim the ability to "reconnect" with your family history or personal history. Personal ancestry and reinvigorating friendships from the past are pastimes, and businesses, that grants many people sincere pleasure.

What does it mean to have a heritage and ancestry? Why has this phenomenon of "discovering" the past and family history become such a growing trend today? What does heritage have to do with personal peace. What does reconnecting with past friends spell for the sense of community that we all want?

These and other ideas will be discussed on the next Stay Peaceful.

I hope you can tune in.

Sunday's Topic for Stay Peaceful: Peace and Justice

On Sunday's Stay Peaceful, the topic will be Peace and Justice.

Connected to the phenomenon of protest, justice is a cause that is often championed through protest. Justice is also considered to be a highly valued part of a society. The term "the just society" continues to inspire many people and governments worldwide.

So, the next Stay Peaceful will discuss aspects of justice in light of achieving a world of peace, a world that we all claim we want.

Peace and Respect

On the next Stay Peaceful the topic will be Peace and Respect.

We hear often of the notion that we must respect certain things in our society. Some common items include:

  1. the environment,
  2. our elders,
  3. other's beliefs,
  4. the law,
  5. the "rules",
  6. the "office".
What do these calls for respect "do" in our everyday walk toward peace? Are these "respects" helpful in creating peace, or deterrents to progressing toward a state of peace, personally and globally?

I hope you can tune in.

Jason

Peace and Protest, Part 2

On the next Stay Peaceful our topic will be Peace and Protest, Part 2.

Further to last week's show, this week's Stay Peaceful will continue to discuss ideas surrounding Peace and Protest.

We hear about protests everyday. Many large protest movements such as Occupy Wall Street and Occupy NRA and Idle No More have become almost de rigeur in our society. Protesters can be found on every continent, involved in practically every kind of cause. Many protest movements have to do with calling for peace or an end to war.

Some ideas that will be discussed further:
  1. What are the impressions that people have of people who protest? Are these sets of impressions accurate?
  2. How do we engage in protest without losing an attitude of peace?
  3. What is "peaceful demonstration"?
  4. How do the Occupy movements and Idle No More align with the ideals of peace?
  5. Can we protest as a means of achieving peace through consultation, or does the action of protest deny such action?
These and other lines of discussion will be examined on the next Stay Peaceful.

I hope you can tune in.

Stay Peaceful,

Jason
